Go Red for Women – American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month. Sadly, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke each year. In 2004, the American Heart Association launched Go Red for Women, a global initiative to end heart disease and stroke in women. So what does it mean to Go Red?

G: GET YOUR NUMBERS

You can’t manage what you don’t measure, which is why knowing your risk is critical to preventing cardiovascular disease. And knowing your risk starts with knowing your numbers. Talk to your healthcare provider today to learn about your Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Blood Sugar and BMI (Body Mass Index)

O: OWN YOUR LIFESTYLE

Along with eating right and being active, real health includes getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness, managing stress, keeping mind and body fit, connecting socially, and more.

R: REALIZE YOUR RISK

Some risk factors you can’t do anything about – like age, race, or family history. But others – like blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and more can be treated, managed or controlled with the help of your healthcare provider.

E: EDUCATE YOUR FAMILY

Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Incorporate heart healthy foods like berries, whole grains, and colorful veggies into each meal. Teach your kids the importance of staying active.

D: DON’T BE SILENT

Tell every woman you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women. Together we can educate others about the importance of heart health.
