Golden Valley Offers New Scholarships to Nursing Students

The Flora R. Martinez Nursing Scholarship is a new scholarship program that was launched last week. The scholarship will be granted to three nursing students from the San Joaquin Valley each year.

Martinez died in 2014 at the age of 90. She served on the Golden Valley board for more than 40 years. Martinez had a special place in her heart for nurses because she saw how much they cared for their patients.

Her son, Tom Martinez, currently serves at the board president at Golden Valley Health Centers. He says that this scholarship is a true testament to her legacy and what she stood for. Martinez believed in the mission of Golden Valley and gave years of her life to make sure that everyone received the health care that they needed.

Each scholarship is worth $5,000 and will go to nursing students who live in the Golden Valley service areas. Applicants must have 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in or accepted at a registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse, or bachelor of science nursing program. Along with submitting the application, it is required to send in a personal state and two letters of recommendation.

The application deadline is April 30 and the scholarship will be awarded to three people in June.

The Golden Valley board of directors are looking for applicants who are passionate about health care and the work that nurses do. They want to encourage future nurses to be willing to devote their time to the underserved population in the Central Valley.

Golden Valley Health Centers is celebrating their 45th anniversary. The Golden Valley CEO, Tom Weber, said that the new scholarship is an appropriate way to celebrate.

Tom Weber stated that the new scholarship will allow them to cultivate that expertise from the talent found in their own backyard.
